It’s Not Too Late to Learn to Love in ’22

Hello –

Wednesday night I was joined by 20 people, about half in person and about half on Zoom, for my first class of Learn to Love in 2022. Thanks to Jacob, that first class was recorded in high quality and is now available on YouTube.

Here it is on our St. Paul’s, San Rafael channel on YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7CT31wI_M0M

This first class is almost entirely my teaching, with very little discussion. The deeper we get into these classes, the more discussion I hope we’ll have.) In the first half hour of Wednesday’s session, I present the overall class structure, our three ways of proceeding and then two essential concepts we’ll be returning to again and again. One concept is a classic four stages of love, the other concept is the classic five powers of the soul. We will be returning to both concepts again and again.

In the second half hour, I introduce people to Coleridge who was, to put it mildly, a real character! I tell some fun stories to give a sense of the man. I conclude with a brief introduction to the two poems we’ll be reading, and then an invitation to read one of the poems, Rime of the Ancient Mariner, with special attention to the word “albatross.” Of what might the albatross be a symbol? (Hint: there is no one right answer!)

Check out the video. If this class seems intriguing to you, I’ll be happy to email you the PDF of the packet for the class and the class outline. I’ll also have hard copies of both available at church on Sunday.

And then feel free to join us, either in Duncan Hall or on Zoom, next Wednesday, the 16th, at 7pm as we explore and discuss the word “albatross,” learn what a symbol is, and hear the story of the second half of Coleridge’s fascinating life. And this is all in the pursuit of learning to love God through language with a Christian master of language.

Email me at cmartin@stpaulssanrafael.org for the packet, the outline and the Zoom link.

Blessings,
