Holy Transgression

Hello –

Last Sunday, we successfully honored Mary with a pile of flowers, turned those flowers into 50 bouquets, delivered them all to the residents of the San Rafael Health Care Center while singing three simple songs AND we were done by 11:58am! At the end, newcomer Michelle and I slapped each other with a high five and newcomer Tiago talked to all of us about what a meaningful morning it had been for him.

Imagine if a team from St. Paul’s once a month, on Folk Sunday, drove or walked the three blocks to the Health Care Center and sang a few of the songs we just sang in church and led a few prayers. It’s easy if you try, because in fact that’s essentially what St. Paul’s did for decades up until COVID.

Might you be called to be part of a regular team that brings music, joy and human warmth to our nearby Health Care Center? I know there are a few of you who are already considering it. The Care Center is eager to have us back. The next Folk Sunday, I believe, is May 26th. Would you consider giving it a shot?

I called this email Holy Transgression because that’s the way Jesus operated. He hung out with lepers, tax collectors, prostitutes, Roman soldiers, and all the people that, through boundaries set up by fear, judgment and condemnation, were treated as “other” and isolated. Like Death Row Ministry and Lunches for Vinnies, singing and praying once a month at the San Rafael Health Care Center is a way to follow Jesus’ example in our own lives. Let’s transgress those false boundaries that keep us apart.
