What You’ll Learn

Hello –

I write to encourage you to learn something new and useful this fall at St. Paul’s and to come to a free Open House a week from this Saturday, on August 25th at 9am.

Imagine that you have signed up for one of the three classes we’re offering this fall on the first Wednesdays of each month. Through the course of the fall, with the guidance of a pair of teachers, you will have the opportunity to focus on one of these three topics:

* What Is Christian Justice? Taught by Jacob Moody and the Rev. Kirsten Snow-Spalding.
• The Necessary Wisdom of Medieval Women. Taught by Meg Gorman and the Rev Carol Luther
• Who Is My Neighbor? Taught by me and the Rev. Rod Miles.

You sign up for one of these three classes. Then, each first Wednesday of the month, you come to St. Paul’s at 7pm and go to whichever room you class is meeting in. So, for example, Rod and I may be teaching our class in the Downing Library while Meg and Carol are in Duncan Hall and Kirsten and Jacob are in the Upper Room.

If you’ve chosen Who Is My Neighbor? you will probably be considering three different sets of demographic surveys with Rod and me:

• On September 5th, we’ll be looking at and discussing A Portrait of Marin, which is a Human Development Report that breaks down the whole county by zip code.
• On October 3rd, Rod may be helping us reflect on a range of surveys that reveal the stresses and strains our youth experience.
• On November 7th, I may be helping us reflect on a range of surveys that reveal the life of the poor in Marin, particularly the homeless, immigrants and those in prison.
• On December 5th, we may consider another population and we will be helping each student articulate what they have learned and what they intend to do next as a result of what they’ve learned.

When you sign up for one of these classes, you pay $40 for all four meetings of that class, not $40 per meeting. That $40 helps pay for hospitality, which starts at 8:30pm after each meeting. You also help pay for a library of books that will support each class and be available for you to read between meetings, if you wish.

A week from Saturday, on August 25th from 9am to 10am we will have a free Open House in the church. You will hear presentations on all three classes so you can decide which of the three you would like to take. Kirsten and Jacob have already prepared a video on What is Christian Justice? The rest of us will be there to tell you what you can expect. We’ve already heard from many people that they wish they could take all three. So do I! But you have to pick just one.

This is a perfect class to which you can invite your neighbors and friends. We’ve sent invitations via both snail mail and email to all the Christian churches of Marin. We hope that, like the work of The Restoration Project, these first Wednesday of the month classes help Christians of Marin identify St. Paul’s as a pleasant and yet challenging resource for them in their lives and ministry.

Here’s the link to join the others who have already signed up. And join us on Saturday, August 25th at 10am for our free Open House.

Blessings,

Christopher
