Join The Rev. Christopher H. Martin, B.A. M. Div Yale University, in a seminar series focusing on the nine orders of angels, and their work as translators of God’s love. We explore these orders through scripture, Christian tradition, philosophers, writers and poetry. Through the angels, we learn to hand ourselves over to God’s loving intention for us through the spiritual practice of loving abandon. What angels are in your life?

9/6 – Love’s Fulfillment
Both St. Augustine and philosopher Soren Kierkegaard remind us that all we have is the present moment. The lowest orders of angels, called Angels, Archangels, and Principalities, are with us in our thoughts in the present moment, guiding us to do good works. In this first teaching, we’ll learn how to listen and respond to angelic prompts in our thoughts.
9/13 – Reflection & Discussion
9/20 – Love’s Presence
The middle orders of angels, called by scripture and tradition Powers, Virtues and Dominions, help us to create our character over a lifespan. These orders are where we can discover our guardian angel, like Clarence in the movie It’s a Wonderful Life. The goal of these angels is to help our lives be beautiful, good and true.
9/27 – Reflection & Discussion
10/4 – Love’s Purpose
The glory of God is the human person fully alive, and the life of the human person is the vision of God. The third set of angels we’ll reflect on are called Thrones. Thrones translate God’s providence for us. In this session we learn to hand ourselves over to God’s loving intention for us through the spiritual practice of loving abandon.
10/11 – Reflection & Discussion
10/25 – Love of Knowledge, Knowledge of Love
In this final teaching, we reflect on what scripture and the Christian tradition teach about the nine orders of angels sent by God to translate God’s heavenly way of love into our earthly lives. We start with the Seraphim, which means “fiery” in Hebrew, who invite us to burn with love, and the Cherubim, which means “fullness of wisdom,” who inspire in us a love of knowledge.
