Sunday: Aids to Prayer

Hello –

Many of you have told us that either you will be coming to campus on Sunday or that you would like us to come to you with communion and perhaps also lunch. I’m so grateful to know that we will be connecting in a new way this Sunday, Consecration Sunday.

There are two more objects you can receive from St. Paul’s this Sunday, candles and Forward Day by Day. The candles are small pillar candles that come with an elegant sticker with our rose window logo. They are ideal for lighting while participating in distance worship or doing your prayers. Day by Day is a popular aid to daily prayer. Each day, on one small page, it gives a bit of scripture, a compelling little story and suggestions of things to pray for. Many at St. Paul’s are devoted to these little books.

Those of you who come on campus on Sunday after 11am will be guided on a safe circuit. You will go through the church doors where, after a time of prayer if you wish, you are invited to come up to the altar where you can place your Consecration Sunday card, if you brought it, and take a small chalice (or chalices if you are getting them for others too.) You will then go through the Vestry, where the bathrooms are. As you then turn right to go into the courtyard, a round table will be in front of you with the candles and Day by Days. Feel free to take one or both. There will then be people waiting in the Courtyard to guide you to the salad and desert. And Libby will be playing beautiful music!

Even if you haven’t reserved a salad and/or do not plan to fill out a Consecration Sunday card, you are still welcome on Sunday to go to the altar and take a chalice or chalices and then a candle and a Day by Day.

If we are brining you communion or lunch and you would also like either a candle or a Day by Day (or both) please email me at c.h.mrtn@gmail.com.

Thank you for all of your positive responses so far. If blessing these little chalices and then later consuming them all at the same time feels like a good way to worship in pandemic, we can choose to repeat it from time to time. That way we can remember that when we share the bread and the wine together, we affirm that we are all part of the one body of Christ.

Blessings,

Christopher
