Betty, Nativity and Hosea

Hello –

As we begin the month of August there are three things to know.

1. Betty Hardin died of a heart attack yesterday. She was 93 years old and, as many of you know, has been part of the St. Paul’s family since the 1960s when her husband, Hugh, began serving St. Paul’s as a priest. By God’s grace her heart attack came just half an hour after I had a lovely visit with Betty that concluded with prayer together, closing with the Lord’s prayer. I have twice now sat in vigil with Betty’s three surviving children. Plans are beginning for a service at St. Paul’s in the coming weeks.

2. Nativity Church, our sister Episcopal Church, will be joining us for worship for the month of August while the Rev. Kirsten Snow-Spalding, their Rector, takes a well earned vacation. Please welcome them in worship this Sunday. They will be contributing to our common life in the following weeks by helping to usher, read and put on coffee hour.

3. This coming Wednesday our weekly Wednesday Bible Study begins a new project and I encourage you to join us. I will begin next week with an hour-long general introduction to the Bible that will be helpful and relevant for you whether you’ve never cracked open a Bible or are a veteran. We will then begin quickly working our way through twelve short books of the Bible called the minor prophets. Buried in the minor prophets are some of the most stunning and memorable lines and images in the Bible. We begin with the first book, Hosea, which first taught the Hebrew people that God is love. We meet in-person only at 10am each Wednesday in Duncan Hall. This Bible Study has been meeting since at least the 1950s.

Blessings,
Christopher
